Babar Ali's 100th Birthday - Jul01,'26

SYED BABAR ALI'S 100th BIRTHDAY - Jul01,2026

Warm birthday wishes to Syed Babar Ali, one of Pakistan's most respected businessmen, philanthropists and visionaries who has turned 100 years old ma Sha Allah.

Syed Babar Ali is a renowned Pakistani businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and educationist who has been recognized for his immense contributions and impact in the fields of education, business, politics, culture, and environmental conservation. He has helped to establish several multinational manufacturing and service companies in Pakistan, and has also led initiatives for cultural preservation and for promoting equality and excellence in education.

He is the founder of Packages Limited, Milkpak Limited - now Nestlé Pakistan Limited, and Lahore University of Management Sciences, a premier higher education institution in Pakistan. He briefly served as the Finance Minister of Pakistan in 1993. He was also the Founding President of World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan and then later became the International President of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) from 1996 to 1999, succeeding Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. He now serves on the board of Coca Cola Pakistan, Siemens Pakistan, and Sanofi-Aventis.

Syed Babar Ali was born in Lahore in 1926. His father Syed Maratib Ali operated a family-owned provisions store for individual regiments of the British Army, and his mother Syeda Mubarik Begum was the daughter of Faqir Syed Iftikharuddin, a member of the Indian Political Service, the elite service of the British Empire. Syed Babar was one of ten children - four sons and six daughters.

He went to the Sacred Heart School for nursery and elementary education until he was eight years old, and then attended Aitchison college. After graduating from Aitchison, he studied Physics and Chemistry at Government College and earned a BSc degree in 1945.

Although Syed Babar Ali wanted to continue his studies in science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he decided to attend University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 1947 to take courses in Business Administration since his father wanted him to eventually join and manage the family business. He went back to Pakistan after completing two semesters of coursework, but returned to the US in 1973 to complete a 13-week Advanced Management Program offered at the Harvard Business School.

After his return to the newly independent state of Pakistan in 1947, he joined his family in setting up new businesses for importing and exporting cotton textiles as well as establishing ginning mills and a motor car company. In 1956, he founded Packages Limited, one of the earliest facilities in Pakistan for converting paper and board into packaging. In 1978, Packages Limited expanded its operations to include a milk processing plant and packaging which became Milkpak Limited. This company was acquired by Nestle, and is now the largest food company in Pakistan.

Syed Babar Ali’s other ventures in business include National Fertilizer Corporation, Systems Limited, Siemens-Pakistan, Coca-Cola Beverages Pakistan Limited and Tri-Pack Films Limited.

His business philosophy has always emphasized egalitarianism and empowering the youth of Pakistan to come forward and take responsibility for growth and change. His business ethics are rooted in self-discipline, fairness, impartiality, and respect. His philanthropic initiatives include Babar Ali Foundation which was founded in 1985. The Foundation gives about a million dollars a year primarily for education and health in Pakistan. He is also a member of Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust Karachi and Shalamar Hospital Lahore.

He also helped to set up Naqsh, an Art School with the purpose of providing training in drawing, ceramics, miniature painting, and landscape primarily catering to people from the Walled City of Lahore, but also people from less affluent localities elsewhere. The Naqsh School has enrolled over a thousand students in the ten years of its existence and continues to enable people to learn new skills and earn a reasonable living.

Syed Babar Ali’s efforts to develop Pakistan’s material and human resources extend into higher education and LUMS is a fine example of his solid dedication and determination to provide Pakistnai youth an educational institution based on international models and standards. Syed Babar Ali’s vision for establishing LUMS was to improve the general quality of business in the country for which good managers were needed both in the public as well as the private sector. The idea was to produce a large pool of young men and women who could manage business, industry and banking.

LUMS was founded with public and private financial contributions as well as assistance from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The Suleman Dawood School of Business was the first school established at LUMS in 1986. However, Syed Babar Ali soon realized that with business management, the country can be improved in a limited way and if he wanted to make a quantum leap, then value would have to be added through what the country produces through the study of science, engineering, law, and social sciences. LUMS has expanded over the years to encompass 12 schools which produce top-quality graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to be leaders in whichever field they choose.

Syed Babar Ali also founded Ali Institute of Education for training of primary and secondary school teachers. He serves as a Board Member of several important educational institutions of Lahore including his alma mater Aitchison College, Kinnaird College, and Lahore School of Economics. He is also a Founding Member of the South Asia Initiative of Harvard University and the Co-Chair of South Asia Centre for Policy Studies currently based in Nepal.

He has been recognized for his outstanding work and has received numerous honours and awards including from the Government of Sweden, the Netherlands, an Order of British Empire (OBE) from Britain, and was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Laws from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Pakistan, and the world, would be a much better place if we have a few more people like Syed Babar Ali. Happy Birthday Syed Babar Ali ! May your legacy of wisdom, generosity and leadership continues to inspire Pakistan and the world for many years to come.

Pakistan - A nation to lead! - Feb'26

Pakistan is not a country to live in...
That’s what they say at the Iftar tables. That’s what the headlines scream. That’s what the queues at the embassies suggest.
But as an educator who has looked into the eyes of over 1.2 million students, I don't see a country to "leave." I see a nation to lead.
We are often so blinded by the dust of our challenges that we forget the gold beneath our feet. As a teacher and a believer in our collective potential, here are 10 reasons why I am proud to call Pakistan my home, and why you should be, too:
1. Our Unstoppable Youth: Our students don't just study; they survive, adapt, and innovate against all odds.
2. Philanthropy in our DNA: We are one of the most charitable nations on earth. We take care of our own like no one else.
3. Global Tech Talent: From local incubators to international boardrooms, Pakistani minds are rewriting the world's code.
4. The Spirit of "Jugaad": Give a Pakistani a problem and zero resources, and they will still find a way. Our innovation is born of necessity.
5. Unmatched Hospitality: We are a nation that will serve a guest a feast even if our own kitchen is bare.
6. Natural Wonders: From the K2 peaks to the Gwadar shores, our land is a geographical masterpiece.
7. Resilience: We have faced every crisis, economic, natural, or social and we are still standing.
8. Cultural Depth: Our poetry, Sufism, and heritage aren't just history; they are a soul-level connection to the world.
9. Women of Steel: From the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs to every household, our women are the backbone of our economic future.
10. The Arfa Karims: We are the soil that produces the youngest geniuses the world has ever seen.
Stop looking for the exit. Start looking for the entrance, the entrance to contribution, to teaching, and to building. Pakistan isn't just a piece of land; it is a heartbeat. And as long as we are breathing, this country is thriving.
Let’s stop asking what Pakistan has given us and start asking what we are leaving for the next generation.
I choose to stay. I choose to build. I choose to love Pakistan. 🇵🇰❤️🫶🏻

A Brave Lady - Jan12,'26

A BRAVE LADY - Jan 2026

In a small village in Pakistan, a jirga (tribal council) delivered a sentence for a crime that never happened.

Mukhtar Mai’s younger brother was accused of offending a powerful clan. The punishment was not for him. It was for her.
On the council’s order, Mukhtar Mai was gang-r**ed by four men and paraded through her village. The expectation was clear: she would kill herself, as countless women before her had.
She didn’t. Mukhtar Mai went to the police. She testified in court. She named her attackers — breaking a silence enforced for generations. Her courage shook Pakistan and drew global attention to honor-based violence.
When compensation was awarded, she made another defiant choice. She used the money to build schools for girls in her village. Today, Mukhtar Mai runs multiple schools, educating hundreds of girls — many from families that once believed girls should never be seen, let alone heard.
Her story isn’t about survival alone. It’s about turning a system designed to erase women into one that educates them.

Governor's interference - Aitchison Principal Resigns - Mar'24

Aitchison Principal resigns over Punjab Governor's interference
in college affairs - March 2024

Michael A. Thomson, the Principal of Lahore's esteemed Aitchison College, has resigned from his position due to disagreements with the Punjab Governor.
In a letter addressed to his staff, Thomson expressed concerns regarding government officials' interference in college affairs. He cited several instances where governmental actions negatively impacted college management.
Thomson's resignation was prompted by changes in policies that seemed to favor specific individuals, leading to what he described as 'bad governance'. He highlighted his departure as a result of mental stress arising from co*nflicts with the governor, particularly regarding the waiving of fines for a federal minister's children.
Emphasizing the importance of keeping politics and nepotism out of educational institutions, Thomson expressed disbelief at the extent of interference in college affairs.
It's worth noting that Thomson had previously resigned in 2018 but withdrew his resignation following persuasion from then-governor Muhammad Sarwar.
In response, Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman clarified the situation regarding the fee waiver for Federal Minister Ahad Cheema's children. He explained that the waiver was granted because the children had ceased attending Aitchison College and had relocated to Islamabad. Despite this, they received a fee notice, which was subsequently waived.

CHRISTIAN ZIONISM - Nov.12,'23

CHRISTIAN ZIONISM
Christian Zionism is an ideology that, in a Christian context, espouses the return of the Jewish people to the Holy Land. Likewise, it holds that the founding of the State of Israel in 1948 was in accordance with Bible prophecy: that the re-establishment of Jewish sovereignty in the Levant — the eschatological "Gathering of Israel" — is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The term began to be used in the mid-20th century, in place of Christian restorationism, as proponents of the ideology rallied behind Zionists in support of a Jewish national homeland.
Advocacy on the part of Christians for a Jewish restoration grew after the Reformation, and is rooted in 17th-century England. Contemporary Israeli historian Anita Shapira suggests that England's Zionist evangelical Christians "passed this notion on to Jewish circles" around the 1840s, while Jewish nationalism in the early 19th century was largely met with hostility from British Jews.
Christian pro-Zionist ideals have generally been common among Protestants since the Reformation. While supporting a mass Jewish return to the Land of Israel, Christian Zionism asserts a parallel idea that the returnees ought to be encouraged to reject Judaism and adopt Christianity as a means of fulfilling biblical prophecies. Polling has suggested a trend of widespread distrust among Jews towards the motives of evangelical Christians.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION - 'The Road Less Traveled'

BOOK RECOMMENDATION - 'The Road Less Traveled'

- A New Psychology of Love,
Traditional Values, and Spiritual Growth

I personally got this book in 2004 upon the recommendation of our Director at the company I was working in then. It was basically recommended for all executives there.

"The Road Less Traveled" is a bestselling self-help book written by author M. Scott Peck. It offers valuable insights and life lessons for personal growth and development. Here are ten key lessons from the book:

1. **Delayed Gratification**: Embrace the concept of delayed gratification by making choices that may be more challenging in the short term but yield greater rewards in the long run. This involves accepting responsibility and tackling difficult tasks, even when they are not immediately satisfying.

2. **Acceptance of Responsibility**: Take responsibility for your actions, emotions, and decisions. Acknowledge your role in shaping your life and accept that you have the power to change and grow.

3. **Love as an Action**: Love is not merely a feeling; it is a commitment and an action. True love involves actively caring for others, making sacrifices, and nurturing relationships through communication and understanding.

4. **Embrace Pain and Suffering**: Pain and suffering are inevitable aspects of life. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and self-discovery, rather than avoiding or denying them. Facing challenges head-on builds resilience and wisdom.

5. **Genuine Self-Discovery**: Engage in honest introspection and self-reflection to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. This process of genuine self-discovery lays the foundation for personal growth.

6. **Growth through Discipline**: Cultivate self-discipline to achieve your goals and develop the skills necessary for personal and professional success. Discipline involves making consistent efforts, even when it's challenging or uncomfortable.

7. **Openness to New Ideas**: Be open-minded and willing to consider new ideas and perspectives. Learning and growth occur when you challenge your existing beliefs and expand your understanding of the world.

8. **Building Healthy Relationships**: Foster healthy and authentic relationships by communicating openly, listening actively, and respecting boundaries. Surround yourself with people who support your growth and well-being.

9. **The Power of Grace**: Embrace the concept of grace, which refers to the experience of the transcendent or spiritual dimension in life. Recognize that life is more profound than the material world and find meaning and purpose beyond the surface level.

10. **The Journey of Spiritual Growth**: Embrace the journey of spiritual growth and explore your spirituality in a way that aligns with your beliefs and values. Nurturing your spiritual side can provide a sense of peace, purpose, and interconnectedness with the world around you.

These lessons from "The Road Less Traveled" encourage self-awareness, personal responsibility, and an open-hearted approach to life, guiding readers towards a path of personal fulfillment and inner peace.

PSYCHOLOGY TODAY - Is physical punishment good for kids?

IS PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT BY PARENTS GOOD FOR CHILDREN?

[Don't forget to check the article link at the end of description below]

This is a topic which I have addressed many years back also in one of my emails (perhaps 2009). At that time, I copied a write-up by a Western PhD holder from Internet with due acknowledgement and sent it across (for a Non-profit cause). The article was not in favor of physical punishment for kids.

The next day someone who had been on my email list said to me in person that I sent that email without thinking. And further said that our Prophet (pbuh) in fact recommended disciplinary beating of children as it is fertile for them.

We don't have solid proof that the relevant saying of Prophet (pbuh) is 100% authentic. And the whole context of those sayings should be known also.

Recently I came across another article which I am sharing with you. The findings by psychologists in this article carry much weight and again oppose the idea of physical punishment for kids along with alternative ideas on how to discipline them. Do study it yourself!

A Powerful Motivational Video - April 02, 2022

A POWERFUL MOTIVATIONAL VIDEO - April 02, 2022

This is a powerful motivational video with great lessons. Though it describes a certain situation but it is still wonderful to listen to the narration. Also, it is from a Christian youtube channel but the lessons are much similar to Islam. There is no harm in listening to such narrations but of course we should be equipped with the basics of our beautiful religion Islam first. Most of the local Islamic scholars will prohibit Muslims from listening to this talk but we just need to be careful, that's all!

VIDEO - A-Z of famous people with Bipolar Disorder

VIDEO - A-Z of famous people with Bipolar Disorder

- 9 Minutes

This video has names (along with their pictures) of famous people or celebrities (past and present) who are or have been sufferers of Bipolar disorder which is a form of mental or psychological illness. It needs to be pointed out that mental or psychological illness is hugely misunderstood in the world.

Mental or psychological illness does not mean that a person is mentally deficient however that person still goes through catastrophic phases which can be minimized or completely eliminated in later life with self-awareness, medical and psychological help etc. Hence such a person has the potential to lead a productive life but it depends on a lot of factors including luck, family support and timely medical solution.

MORE COMMENTS ON THE VIDEO

The video on famous people with Bipolar disorder that was aired on WhatsApp two days back has information sourced from Wikipedia which is not 100% authentic though it does tell us the truth about many famous people. For example Winston Churchill (Prime Minister UK), Ralph Waldo Emerson (Writer and Poet), Sidney Sheldon (Producer, Writer) did not have Bipolar Disorder but they had chronic depression which is just one part of Bipolar Disorder. Some others in this video like Isaac Newton also did not have this ailment most probably.

As we know that “Bi” in Bipolar means “double” or “two”. Patients of Bipolar disorder are basically characterized by overlapping phases of chronic depression and mania. The severity and the pattern vary from one patient to another.

However, many others in this video did or do have Bipolar disorder like Earnest Hemingway (Nobel Prize winner for Literature who wrote novels like ‘For whom the bell tolls’ and ‘A farewell to Arms’, apart from others, both of which were made into Hollywood films), Stephen Fry (actor), Jaun Claude Van Damme (actor in action movies), Lord Byron (Poet) etc. etc. etc.

A little additional information is also given here verified from other sources which is eye-opening: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21894105/
