“TOTALITY” - by Roman Ahsan

No philosophy here, just a random thought…

“TOTALITY”

by Roman Ahsan – February, 2010

Our journey in this world could never be smooth. We are continually challenged by the tides that seek to overthrow us. We remain ignorant of the best course of action that we need to enforce. Success or failure is just one aspect of life. How we evaluate our fellow beings is something which carries greater significance. We ignore the “Totality” factor while judging people. The phrase “Nobody’s perfect” gets lost when we attempt to criticize or condemn others. Sometimes we wipe out individuals from our books as “totally bad” just because they failed once to fulfill certain impressions carried by us about them. Human beings are complex souls. Just like the waves continue their dance on the seashore, advancing and receding back, the goodness or evil in every person goes through continuous revisions. We need to abide by the “Totality factor” while assessing people in our lives which also depends on how long we have known a certain person. It is always in our interest if we try not to forget any kindness extended to us in the past by the “culprit” forgiving him/her for the current excesses so committed.  All that is required is carefully weighing the goodness in a person against the evil while not forgetting our weaknesses too. This could serve as just one of the recipes for making this world a better place to live in! We have to try to make this world a beautiful place for all to live in. If we don’t, then suffering might fall in our lap one day with no one to comfort us!

  1. Sage advice Roman. I appreciate your approach here. I have come to the conclusion that the meaning of the line "judge ye not, less ye be judged"... means that I am just not capable (as a human being) of knowing or understanding the complexity of the make up of any other human being... including myself. It's not that we won't or don't judge others... we still do.. but today I just know that my human capabilities of understanding the entire life or makeup ("complex souls") of another person are quite inadequate. I will try to continue to practice forgiveness of others as well as myself too. I love focusing on the "Totality"... rather than any individual weakness that we happen to note about someone... I may judge the individual act.. but may I also separate the two... always trying to show mercy and compassion for the person. Reminds me of another line... "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do."... or in todays language perhaps.. for give them for their unconsciousness... or ignorance. Hurt people... hurt people.
